I had little plans for 2021. Maybe a bracket or two. A lotto pick. Honestly the charm of college basketball was pretty dim for the old Pool Bully. What with the Hoosiers becoming perennial non-invites and generally a program in the doldrums. None of it was interesting.
Then someone gave Scott Dolson a $10 million handshake and now you have my attention again.
So who's it gonna be?

I am all in for Nate Oats, if we can't pick out a sold HS coach from the state. Personal favorite idea... In any case, Nate was a HS coach less than 10 years ago, so I'm all in. Enough with the best coaches are in college shenanigans!

Now some of the usual Internet assholes are claiming IU is on the verge of making "the home run hire of home run hires."
Weird thing is I have no idea who the fuck that would actually be.
Stevens? Give Knight super soldier serum? Kobe back from the great beyond?

Don't ask me, I thought Archie would be a good hire. I do like how Dolson mentioned installing a modern college bball program in his presser. Anything in the 21st Century would be nice. Maybe even .... gasp ... names ... on ... the ... jerseeeeyyyssss

ESPN radio around noon when I went to lunch spent a long time in-between Dak Prescott contract talk discussing the IU coach opening. Kinda surprised how long they talked it up.
Of course Zeke's name was the guy that some of these ESPN mouthbreathers mentioned...love Isiah as a player, but that dude was nightmare as a coach everywhere he went.
This guy on the article on the IDS I did not know about... Joe Pasternack — Pasternack could have been included in the Indiana guys list too. A former IU basketball manager like Dolson, Pasternack was recently named Big West coach of the Year. He has four straight 20 winning seasons at UCSB and is headed to the NCAA Tournament.
I was pretty surprised to find out that Thad Motta was only 53.

Some of the media types here have mentioned Pasternack, but only in context of 'here's an IU guy they might consider.' A buddy of ours here is pretty tight with Matta. I asked him about the possibility. His response was "I think that ship sailed a while ago." He's also told us Matta's favorite pastime these days is walking to his mailbox to get his buyout checks from OSU.

Here's my tidbit for the day.....IU asked to talk to Stevens and Brad said he would listen. That has happened, where things are at after that are unknown. IU is pursuing Brad and only Brad if that falls through they have a second tier core group of guys they will pursue. Where things are at with Brad are unknown, they may be dead or they may be negotiating terms, etc. The tidbit is.....there is a private plane going to from Bloomington, IN to White Plains, NY and at the same time that plane lands in White Plains, there is private plane coming from Boston landing in White Plains, NY...... Now, all that may be a coincidence, BUT if you have been following the rumor mill, earlier this week it was rumored that Isiah Thomas was playing or had played an intermediary role between IU and Stevens. Guess who lives in White Plains, NY

Of course the flip side is I'm guessing they're also thinking "well, worst case scenario we hire Beilein."

Here is a post from Rajohns on Peegs: This summarizes things to this point:
I don’t divulge sources — never have and never will — so that will stay private, but so much of this played out in public, it’s not really difficult to discuss. Heck, it was discussed for three days on national sports TV shows like PTI, Around the Horn and SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt.
IU was informed that Stevens would at least listen this time, which he wouldn’t do four years ago. IU made a pitch. Now, don’t get hung up on “Did so-and-so fly to such-and-such place,” and all that. That’s not how these things happen most of the time. It’s just not. Plenty of coaches reach the point they basically agree in principle before ever having a face-to-face meeting with anyone from a university. It’s just not that difficult with all the mechanisms available.
There were some folks pretty far up the booster chain who were convinced IU was going to be able to land Stevens. Heck, if you saw my text messages, you would be stunned I stayed so calm and kept saying things like “longshot.”
There were more than a few people of note convinced it was going to get done. Several tried to convince me it was safe to write that IU was “close” to landing Stevens.
There was no way in the world I was going to write anything close to that without confirmation from Stevens. It was always going to be his decision whether to leave the NBA or not. So even while Mark Titus — good guy, we’re friends — was saying things like “75 percent,” and others were tweeting “done deal,” “deal imminent,” etc., I wasn’t ever comfortable going that far because there wasn’t enough solid information from Stevens to go that far.
“Nothing at all is guaranteed. I want to stress that. Coaching searches can be like recruitments times 10 with stops and starts, momentum then stalls, etc. But at this hour, there is a chance something happens within a reasonable time frame. At this hour, the backroom chatter suggests there remains a chance Indiana could land Brad Stevens. Obviously, the decision will be Brad’s. He gets to decide if he wants to be in the NBA or in college, but at this hour a chance still remains.” — That’s as far as I was comfortable going and even that was probably the far edge of my comfort zone.
During the week, Stevens gave several non-denial denials. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, he could have shut everything down and didn’t. He made ambiguous statements on camera. Beyond that, NBA coaches have substantial PR departments at their disposal. Sending a statement could have happened at any point during the week. It didn’t.
Did Stevens struggle with the decision? I do not know. Some say he did. Some say he didn’t. I don’t know if we’ll ever truly know. At some point, there probably will be revisionist history — like Victor Oladipo claiming he only had one scholarship offer coming out of high school — and we’ll all deal with that whenever it happens.
I think many will recall when Stevens took the Celtics job, his wife had a memorable TV interview when she said she had to tell him he had to take the Celtics job even though he initially said no. Did the thought of IU tug at his heartstrings this time? Did he contemplate it seriously? I don’t know. I don’t know if anyone other than Brad and his wife can truly answer that question.
So why did Stevens decide to stay with the Celtics? I don’t know. Maybe what several NBA people told me is correct, that you don’t leave a high-resource franchise like the Celtics. Several NBA people told me that. “If you want to be in the NBA, you don’t walk away from the Boston Celtics,” is how one NBA executive phrased it.
I think that’s pretty much the Cliffs Notes version of the past week.

I was giving you props about your jizzy Scenes from an Italian Restaurant and merely saying that when Dolson played ball against us on the Jackson Heights court back when -- and y'all know I am contractually obligated to say this -- WE WERE STILL WINNING F****** TITLES -- all of those in my pack of drunken stoner future underachievers read the same thing: DOOSH. Hopefully, he grew out of that and will put his undoubtedly deft fundraising skills to use and land someone that will make this wholly unacceptable garbage relevant again. #1938Rules #ABoyCanDream ...

No anger, Ed. I just got a giggle out of the notion that an entire graduating class at IU collectively identified one member as a douchebag and then that dude became the most public-facing administrator at the university. Like shouldn't someone have called up and said "On behalf of the class of '38, we want to let you know that Dolson is a douche and shouldn't be the AD." And class of '38 is just low-hanging fruit because yer old, Ed. I will join the 'age starts with 5' club on Wednesday, so I had to get my shots in while I can and before this board inevitably goes dead after this weekend.

I do not believe that IU should play the "Oh this guy won 3 games in the tournament at a mid major so he should be our next coach" game. That was Archie - and everyone saw how bad that sucked. Beilein is too old and stood in front of a group of mainly black basketball players and called them thugs. Matta has serious health issues. Not sure why I haven't heard Chris Beards name - he can bring Mac McClung over as well. Your graduating class buddy better not fuck this up - or we will for sure become Nebraska football.
Fuck Purdue.
